Nederlands-Armeense Waterpolo-internationaal Biurakn Hakhverdian op weg naar de Olympische Spelen van 2008 in China

Dit artikel is gebaseerd op een interview van Robbert Minkhorst met Nederlands-Armeense internationaal Biurakn Hakhverdian, gepubliceerd in het Leidsche Dagblad van 30 juli 2007.

Sommige sporters rusten in de zomer uit, terwijl anderen zoals wielrenners en ook waterpolospelers als Biurakn Hakhverdian juist moeten presteren. Biurakn Hakhverdian, dochter van Iraans-Armeense ouders, heeft praktisch geen vakantie gehad, omdat ze deel uitmaakt van het nationale Nederlandse vrouwen waterpoloteam, in de voorbereiding naar de kwalificatiewedstrijden voor de Olympische Spelen van volgend jaar in China.

Er zijn nog twee kwalificatieronden te gaan. De eerste is het Europese Olympische Kwalificatie Toernooi in Kirishi, Rusland van 19 tot 26 augustus, waar maar één van de 9 deelnemende ploegen zich kan kwalificeren. Vervolgens vindt in een toernooi begin komend jaar de laatste ronde plaats, waar nog eens vier nationale teams zich kunnen kwalificeren.

Het Nederlands Olympisch Comité NOC*NSF heeft het dameswaterpoloteam de A-status gegeven, hetgeen betekent dat de ploeg zich fulltime met de training kan bezighouden. Meestal vinden de trainingen plaats in het nationale sportcentrum in Zeist, maar ook worden internationale vriendschappelijke wedstrijden afgewerkt.

Over het team zegt Hakhverdian: "Het gaat nu prima bij de Nederlandse ploeg. We doen veel aan teambuilding. De sfeer is in een jaar heel erg veel verbeterd. Er is minder kliekjesvorming. Je laat weten dat je er voor de ander bent. Je laat blijken dat je blij bent als een ander iets goeds heeft gedaan".

Biurakn Hakhverdian heeft een missie, nl deelname aan de Olympische Spelen van 2008. Ze beseft volkomen dat haar deelname aan het nationale team een grote impact heeft op haar leven.

Ze heeft haar studie aan de Universiteit van Leiden opgeschort, waarvoor ze zich een beetje schuldig voelt; ze weet ook dat een opleiding uiteindelijk noodzakelijk is. Aan de andere kant zou het niet anders gewild hebben. Als ze het gevoel had dat ze er teveel voor zou moeten opgeven, had ze niet voor dit leven gekozen.

De waterpolo carrière van Hakhverdian begon in Leiden in ZVL, een plaatselijke vereniging. In oktober 2005 ging ze internationaal en kwam bij de Griekse club Ethnicos Piraeus; maar toen duidelijk werd dat daar een miscalculatie gemaakt was bij het (beperkte) aantal buitenlandse spelers, kwam ze terug naar Nederland. Maar de tijd, die zij in Griekenland heeft doorgebracht, was wel voldoende voor haar om zich te realiseren dat dat is wat ze wil.

Omdat de nationale coach Robin van Galen van al zijn speelsters eist, dat ze in Nederland spelen, speelt Hakhverdian sinds anderhalf jaar bij Polar Bears, welke club dit jaar de landstitel won. Dat betekent dat zij met Polar Bears het komende jaar ook voor de Europese Waterpolo Cup zal spelen.

Armenian-Dutch Water Polo International Player Biurakn Hakhverdian Reaching for the 2008 Olympics in China

This article is based on an interview with Armenian-Dutch water polo international player Biurakn Hakhverdian, by Robbert Minkhorst published in the Dutch Daily newspaper 'Leidsch Dagblad' on 30 July 2007.

Some sportsmen and sportswomen are resting during the summer while others, like cyclists and also water polo players such as Hakhverdian, have to perform. Biurakn Hakhverdian, daughter of Iranian-Armenian parents, has barely had a vacation as she is a part of the Dutch national women’s water polo team preparing for the qualifications for the next year’s Olympic Games in China.

There are still two qualification rounds to go. First, the Dutch team will be competing in Kirishi, Russia from 19 to 26 August for the European Olympic Qualification Tournament, where only one of the nine competing teams will qualify for the Olympics. At the beginning of next year, the last round will be played and four additional national teams can qualify.

The Dutch Olympic Committee NOC*NSF gave the women water polo team the A-status, meaning the group can work full time. Mostly, the team trains in the national sport centre in Zeist, along with training and friendly competition tournaments abroad.

Regarding the team, Hakhverdian says “we are getting along within the team now, we are working on teamwork. From last year, the atmosphere has improved a lot; we have grown closer as a team. There is less ‘clique- forming’. You show your fellow teammates that you are there for them, and that you sympathise. You recognise and are happy when another player in the team does something well.”

Hakhverdian has a mission to participate in the 2008 Olympics. She acknowledges being a part of a national team can affect her life in many ways. She postponed her studies at Leyden Universitiy in the Netherlands, of which she feels a bit guilty, “in the end one needs education.” But she wouldn’t have it any other way. If she felt she was missing out on many things, she would have made a different choice.

Hakhverdian’s water polo career started at a local club in Leyden, called ZVL. In October 2005 Hakhverdian went abroad and joined the Greek Club Ethnicos Piraeus, where after finding out the club had made a miscalculation in the (limited) number of players from abroad, she left. But the time she spent in Greece was enough for Hakhverdian to realise that her ambition is in that direction.

As national coach Robin van Galen wants all his international players to be close at hand for the Olympic qualification, Hakhverdian spent last one and half year playing in the Dutch team Polar Bears winning a national title. This means she will also play for the Polar Bears for the European water polo Cup coming year.

De 2e ronde is voor Oranje inmiddels overbodig. Op teletext was het scoreverloop van de beslissende wedstrijd tegen Rusland, na verlenging gewonnen met 13-12, te volgen. Hopelijk veranderen ze niets meer aan de samenstelling van de ploeg ten nadele van Biur voor de Spelen.

Als deze ploeg kan winnen tegen de favorieten, Rusland, dan moet de NL coach wel erg dom zijn om niet dezelfde team te behouden voor de Spelen, tenzij één van de spelers niet meer optimaal speelt in het komend seizoen.
