This is an update to a recent sport item by I. Drost about Armenian-Dutch Water polo player Biurakn Hakhverdian, whose Water Polo team has been qualified earlier today for 2008 Olympics in China.

Biurakn Hakhverdian bereikt Olympische droom

Biurakn Hakhverdian, Armeense van afkomst, droomde ervan volgend jaar naar de Olympische spelen in China te gaan. Vandaag won het team waarin zij speelt, het Nederlandse nationale waterpolo team, het Europese Olympische Kwalificatie Toernooi in Kirishi, Rusland, waar alleen de winnaar zich direct kon plaatsen voor deelname aan de Olympische Spelen, volgend jaar in China.

Gedurende het hele toernooi speelde het team ver boven verwachting. Het kwam als een grote verrassing dat het team in de finale het favourite, Russische team versloeg met 13-12. In een reactie, vauit Kirishi, gaf Hakhverdian aan “sprakeloos “ te zijn en “heel trots”. Ze kan het nauwelijks nog geloven dat het team volgend jaar om deze tijd aan het spelen zal zijn in Beijing, China!

Olympic dream coming true for Biurakn Hakhverdian

Biurakn Hakhverdian, daughter of Iranian-Armenian parents, was dreaming of going to the 2008 Olympics in China. Today her team, the Dutch woman waterpolo team won the European Olympic Qualification Tournament in Kirishi, Russia, where only the winner (out of the nine competing teams) could qualify directly for the Olympics in China.

During the whole tournament the team had been playing far beyond what could be expected. Winning the finals against the favourite, Russian team came as a surprise for many. Biarakn, reacting from Kirishi, is "speechless" and "very proud". She still can't believe it yet that this time next year the team will be playing in the Olympic Games in Beijing.
